Sept. 01--Some vacationers with plans to celebrate the long Labor Day weekend along the Grand Strand are keeping a close eye on Hurricane Earl's path, though area hoteliers say they haven't received a rash of cancellations that might dampen the season-ending weekend.

Vacation rental company Dunes Realty has received a couple dozen concerned calls, and staff have been assuring guests that the hurricane is projected to miss the Grand Strand, owner Ryan Swaim said. There have been no cancellations so far because of the hurricane, he said.

"Experience says it doesn't look like it's going to give us too much trouble," Swaim said.

The Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce hasn't fielded any concerned calls about thehurricane yet, President and Chief Executive Brad Dean said, although the calls may pick up as the weekend approaches. Many weekend travelers decide whether to come to the Grand Strand late in the week, making their choice at the last minute based on the latest weather forecast, Dean said. Any bad weather may keep these travelers away, whether it's rain or a hurricane, he said.

The Strand has been lucky so far that it has avoided any major storms, Dean said, and projections show the area will also dodge Earl as it heads north.

The hurricane will only affect a very small percentage of vacationers who have reservations at the beachfront Dayton House hotel, general manager Paul Garcia said. Garcia said he expected to start receiving a few calls regarding the hurricane today.

The Sea Hawk Motel is still looking at a good Labor Day weekend, buoyed by a large group of international students who have booked rooms, owner Fred Smith said.
