By Paul Peirce, Tribune-Review, Greensburg, Pa.McClatchy-Tribune Regional News Sept. 02--Westoreland County detectives today charged Latrobe's ex-mayor, Thomas J. Marflak, with two counts of theft by
unlawful taking related to his former management of the Wingate Inn in Unity. The detectives allege Marflak, 40, stole $68,420 between April 2007 and August 2009 from the Wingate, which he left last year to become owner of the Inn at Mountain View, also in Unity. Marflak's attorney, Scott Avolio, denies the charges, saying the money was reimbursement for business expenses Marflak incurred during the period cited in the criminal complaint. "He's basically being singled out because he's a competitor now," Avolio said. "This is a civil matter, and it shouldn't be handled in criminal court. We're going to fight this." The charges won't affect operation of the Inn at Mountain View, Avolio said. In 2005, Marflak became the first Republican in 40 years to be elected as Latrobe mayor. Last year, he withdrew his candidacy as the Republican nominee for Westmoreland County prothonotary. His mayoral term ended in January. District Judge Michael Mahady, who released Marflak on recognizance bond, scheduled a preliminary hearing for Oct. 4. ----- To see more of the Tribune-Review or to subscribe to the newspaper, go to http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/tribunereview/.
