A CAD11.65 million settlement has been awarded by a Canadian judge to 184 passengers who were on an Air France jet which overshot the runway at Toronto in 2005.
On the 25th of August,
2005 Air France Flight 358 attempted to land during inclement weather when it overshot the runway and hit a fence before landing in a ravine. While 33 passengers were taken into hospital, all 297 passengers and 12 crew members survived the incident.
In 2006, a suit was filed against Air France, the Greater Toronto Airport Authority, Airbus S.A.S. and Goodrich Corp for post-traumatic stress and injuries related to the incident.
It’s understood that 45 passengers had opted not to go forward with the suit, while 68 others had settled the incident with Air France independently.
In the 24th of December ruling, CAD10 million was to be paid out by Air France, while CAD1.65 million was to be paid out by manufacturers of the aircraft Airbus S.A.S. and Goodrich Corp.
While the class action has ended, outer court cases surrounding the case continue onwards, with Air France continuing its case against the Greater Toronto Airports Authority and Nav Canada for loss of an aircraft. At the same time, the Greater Toronto Airports Authority is counter-suing Air France for environmental and clean-up costs. Travel BlackBoard(www.etravelblackboard.com) |
